Getting Started
The first step in getting started in therapy is a brief phone call. You can click the button above to schedule this call online. During this call we will have a couple of questions for you.
- Why are you seeking services? We won’t get into great detail with this during the phone call, but it is important for us to have a basic understanding of your needs. This is important because it leads to the second question.
- Are we the right fit for you? If we do not have expertise or experience working with the issues you are facing, it would be unethical to work with you. There are also some issues that cannot be appropriately addressed via telehealth or in a small private practice setting. We can try to point you in the direction of service providers that do specialize in working with your needs. If you struggle with any of the following issues, we may not be the right fit for you.
- Significant self-injury, active and consistent suicidal thoughts, severe and persistent depression, drug/alcohol addiction, mania or psychosis, personality disorders
- If you are in an abusive relationship, couples counseling is never recommended. Call 211 to be connected to your local domestic violence resource organization or 911 if you are in danger.
- Are you willing to make the commitment that therapy requires? Therapy requires time and effort, and must be a priority. Can you commit to attending regular sessions? (likely once a week initially) Are you willing to do “homework” when given? Are you willing to be challenged and pushed outside of your comfort zone? All these things are necessary to make long-term change.
After the consultation call, if we have the expertise and resources to meet your needs we will set up the initial evaluation. We will obtain some basic demographic information and ask you to complete some new client paperwork through our online portal. Our online portal is secure and HIPAA-compliant. We will provide you with information about privacy/confidentiality as well as the cost of services and payment options. To see options for payment and what insurances we take, you can visit our Insurance and Payment page.
